DC Journel Op-ED: Automotive “Right to Repair” Isn’t Going Away

Watch the Ad "This Guy":

Letter to the editor: Don’t fall for the REPAIR Act
The hellscape for independent automotive repairers described by Stephen Moore in “Congress can help auto repair shops keep America running” (Web, Oct. 6) is, let’s just say, not accurate.
The REPAIR Act is necessary, he writes, because the auto industry has “flexed” and “push[ed] independent mechanics and parts suppliers out into the cold, leaving them unable to access the thousands of bits of information involved in fixing cars and trucks.”
I’ve been in the auto business for 25 years. This doesn’t ring a bell.
Op/Ed: Independent mechanics aren’t locked out of fixing your vehicle
Across social media, ads and op-eds are claiming that automakers are shutting out small repair shops like mine. They say we can’t get the tools, data, or information needed to fix your car.
That simply isn’t true.
I know because I live this every day.
...
My business has access to what’s required. So do other businesses like mine in North Carolina, South Carolina, and across the country. I know this because of my years as a member of, and leader in, my state association that represents independent repair businesses.
So why the push for the so-called “REPAIR Act” in Washington?
It’s not about helping small shops. It’s being driven by big aftermarket parts chains and insurance companies that stand to profit from controlling how your car is repaired.
