May 22, 2020 – The Alliance for Automotive Innovation (Auto Innovators) today announced that it will intervene in federal litigation on fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions standards for model year 2021-2026 light-duty vehicles. These standards were recently finalized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Auto Innovators’ position will support year-over-year improvements in fuel economy and greenhouse gas standards.
Recently filed litigation argues that the 2021-2026 standards should be lower, or remain flat. Auto Innovators does not agree. Rather, Auto Innovators supports federal policy that improves fuel economy and reduces vehicle greenhouse gas emissions as part of a cleaner, safer, smarter future for personal mobility. The organization’s member companies continue to make substantial investments in technologies aimed at these improvements.
“The auto industry remains united in its desire for yearly improvements in fuel economy and greenhouse gas reductions,” said John Bozzella, president and CEO of Auto Innovators. “Automakers continue to bring highly fuel-efficient and electric-drive vehicles to U.S. consumers and advocate for policies that increase the development of the electric vehicle market. Despite calls by interest groups for flat standards, our members are committed to increasing standards that support investment in vehicles that improve fuel efficiency, and that balance affordability, safety, and the environment.”
