Alliance for Automotive Innovation Releases Detailed Q3 Electric Vehicle Sales Report

Eleven States and DC See New EV Registrations Above 5 Percent; Light Trucks Make Up 60 Percent of the ZEV Market

The Alliance for Automotive Innovation (Auto Innovators) today released the latest Get Connected Electric Vehicle Quarterly Report (Get Connected), providing an overview of zero emission vehicle (ZEV) sales for the third quarter (Q3) of 2021 along with purchasing trends by state and vehicle segment. The full report is available here.

“This report highlights the growth we have seen in ZEV sales across the country over the past year,” said Auto Innovators President and CEO, John Bozzella. “ZEV sales remained strong throughout the third quarter of 2021, with the market share of new ZEV vehicles registered increasing in all states.”

Key takeaways from the latest edition of the report:

- The data shows there is consistent growth in the ZEV sector. Year-over-year, the third quarter had 82,000 more ZEV unit sales than the same period in 2020. Through the first three quarters of the year, ZEV sales represented 3.9 percent of the market – up from 2 percent over the same period of 2020.

- The increased selection of ZEV models is accompanying growth trends, with sales of crossovers, SUVs, minivans, and pickup trucks making up nearly 60 percent of the ZEV market.

- California continues to lead the nation in ZEV adoption, with 14 percent of new vehicle registrations in the state comprised of ZEVs in the third quarter. The District of Columbia made the biggest moves in market share, improving its quarterly performance by nearly 7 percentage points, year-over-year.

“This data shows the continued impact of the automotive industry’s commitment to electrification and ability to meet consumer demand,” Bozzella said. “Projections show consumers will be able to choose from 130 ZEV models by 2026. Increased choice of models in the ZEV sector – along with public and private investments to strengthen supply chains, expand purchase incentives, and build adequate charging infrastructure – are critical to ensuring we capitalize on this once-in-a-generation opportunity to secure a cleaner, safer, and smarter transportation future.”

Earlier this year, Auto Innovators released its first-ever Get Connected Electric Vehicle Quarterly Report, underlining the significant growth in ZEV sales over the past year and analyzing ZEV adoption by segment and state.

Last week, Auto Innovators released its Recommended Attributes for EV Charging Stations to address important considerations for publicly available EV charging in light of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act’s $7.5 billion down payment on charging infrastructure.
