WASHINGTON, DC — Alliance for Automotive Innovation today released the following statement after the White House issued a presidential memorandum covering automotive freedom to fix.

“We're on the same page with President Trump and share his priorities here: more vehicle choice, more vehicle affordability and a policy that ensures America's car owners remain free to fix their vehicles anytime, anywhere.
“Today’s White House memorandum reaffirms these principles: protecting both automotive intellectual property and confidential business information. That’s an important acknowledgement and builds on the longstanding commitment from automakers to provide consumers and independent repair shops with the same repair instructions, tools and diagnostic codes they provide franchised auto dealers.
"This is precisely what we've been saying as far back as 2003: Automakers support the freedom to fix. Always have, always will.
"So, a significant directive from President Trump and the EPA that should end the confusion and controversy around automotive repair once and for all.”

· In 2003, automakers committed to providing independent vehicle repair shops the same repair instructions and information provided to franchised dealers in a letter to U.S. Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-ND).
· In 2014, automakers reaffirmed that commitment in a Memorandum of Understanding between automakers, independent repairers and aftermarket parts retailers.
· In 2023, Alliance for Automotive Innovation signed an agreement with the Automotive Service Association and the Society of Collision Repair Specialists, reaffirming the 2014 MOU on automotive right to repair.
· In May 2026, the House Energy & Commerce Committee codified that landmark MOU in H.R. 7389 indicating the existing 2014 framework governing automotive right to repair should be the law of the land.
