Vice President, Safety Policy
Scott A. Schmidt is the Vice President responsible for vehicle safety and regulatory affairs at the Alliance for Automotive Innovation where he coordinates activities relating to vehicle safety performance, driver distraction, advanced technologies for traffic safety, electric vehicle/battery safety, vehicle acoustical sound, as well as international harmonization of regulatory requirements. Mr. Schmidt received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1987 from the University of Maryland where he started his involvement in automotive engineering through participation in SAE student vehicle design competitions and student research into ATV rollover and tire testing. Since then he has held automotive engineering positions encompassing regulatory (NHTSA), vehicle testing (IIHS), alternative fuels (EA Engineering), military vehicles (VSE), regulatory compliance (Land Rover) and his current passion automotive safety. In addition to his activities at Auto Innovators, he is currently the advisor to the University of Maryland Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Mini Baja team as well as instructor for a sophomore level automotive engineering course (ENME 208). He is also active in SAE activities and has served as the chairman for the SAE Government Industry meeting. Throughout his career, he has maintained leadership positions on the local SAE Washington DC section governing board, having served as section chair and currently the student activities chair.
