Reporting to the Vice President of Safety and Technology Policy and serving as an integral member of a safety and technology policy team, the Director of Safety will be responsible for the development and execution of association strategy for key automotive technical and regulatory safety policy matters. 

Key functions include development and execution of association strategies on safety policy,  obtaining and disseminating information regarding significant safety developments with other safety stakeholders including government and NGOs, identification of emerging safety issues, generation of association responses to comment requests and safety legislation, generation of safety research needed to support association positions, management of technical work groups, and promotion of member interests.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Proactively identify and engage on safety policy topics on behalf of the association.

  • Lead and manage the development of policy positioning and engagement strategies on key safety policy topics.

  • Oversee working groups on a variety of safety topics which may include crash avoidance technologies, electric vehicle safety, early warning reporting, advanced vehicle lighting, vehicle noise, driver distraction, and crash reporting.

  • Engage regularly and constructively with the U.S. Department of Transportation on vehicle safety policy matters.

  • Develop regulatory comments, testimony, talking points, speeches, and presentations on safety policy matters.

  • Identify and pursue opportunities to reduce roadway deaths automotive and non-automotive solutions that conform to Member needs, abilities, and wants.

  • Work closely and collaboratively with federal, state, and advocacy colleagues to advance the association’s safety priorities.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in automotive safety or related policy area.

  • Prior experience in a regulatory agency, trade association, or company is preferred.

  • Familiarity with federal rulemaking, especially at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

  • Advanced degree in Engineering or similar technical degree a plus.
